German footwear brand Von Wellx shifts base from China to India

German footwear brand Von Wellx has recently relocated their entire production base from China to Agra in India. They make orthopedic footwear that helps in dealing with heel pain, swollen feet and provides greater comfort.

The footwear company has set up two manufacturing units and they plan to produce up to 2.5 million pairs annually in different segments.  The setting up of the units are in partnership with India’s Latric industries Group at the Export Promotion Industrial Park (EPIP) in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. The investment from the German footwear brand Von Wellx in the first phase of the project is of Rs 110 crores over two years.

They also have a plan for phase two, where more ancillary industries will also be set up to provide high quality raw materials like chemicals, fabrics and outsoles which are not currently available in India. The major aim of introducing such ancillary industries is to help to reduce imports and improve the quality of Indian made footwears. The units in Agra were inaugurated by Alok Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Infrastructure & Industrial Development Department, in an online ceremony.

It is an important milestone in post Covid-19 era that an investment proposal has been materialized within a short span of five months – said Alok Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary, Infrastructure & Industrial Development Department

It is said that the collaboration would create around 10,000 job opportunities in India. Casa Everz Gmbh, the owner of German footwear brand Von Wellx, stated that India was chosen for the collaboration because of the availability of raw materials, government opportunities, and due to the demographic dividend of the country. Since footwear manufacturing is not an easy task and requires a high level of labor, they had to choose a country that would provide them both the resources and the best economic conditions. Hence, after rounds and rounds of discussions they decided on India.

This is the time for India to get into joint ventures with foreign companies. – said Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road and Transport

According to reports, the company is expected to start two new units, one near Jewar in a 10,000 sq. area and another at Kosi- Kotwan over an area of 7.5 acre.

Due to the restrictions imposed by Beijing and the tension over the alleged improper handling of the COVID-19, many companies are seeking an exit from China and are looking to expand business in other geographies. The strategies to attract foreign investments and to make India a self-reliant nation seems to be on roll and such huge investment from Von Wellx in India is a great example.

Telecom giant of India, Reliance Jio topped 405M subscribers in the third quarter and the first operator outside China to surpass 400M subscribers in the single-market country. According to the filing, Mukesh Ambani posted a net increase in profits of 12.85 percent on a quarter-by-quarter basis with a sum of Rs. 2844 crore quarter ending September 30. The recent news of ADIA and PIF investing in Reliance’s fiber optic business further adds value to its net worth.

The company has evaluated the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has determined that there is no significant impact on its financial position and performance. – said the company in its filing

Jio’s operating revenue has increased by 33 percent to Rs. 17,481 crores from Rs.13,130 crore. It has also reported that its EBITDA run rate has crossed $1B and net profit up to $409 million. Facebook and Google, who are among their 13 investors, also mentioned that average revenue per user has increased from $1.88 to $1.94 in the second quarter.

This is intended to fast track the rollout of indigenous 5G network infrastructure, and services in India. Qualcomm Technologies and Jio achieved over a 1 Gbps milestone on the Reliance Jio 5GNR solution with a Tier-I carrier in the US. – said Reliance, in its statement

Abu Dhabi Authority and Saudi Arabia’s PIF are also an investor in Jio Platforms, which has raised about $20 billion this year. Earlier this month, the oil-to-retail giants, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), announced tier investment plans of $1.01 billion in the company’s critical asset.

The investment in Reliance’s fiber optic business will take place in the form of stakes sales and borrowing for digital businesses to raise about $5.4 billion. Digital Fiber Infrastructure Trust, as the Indian firm, makes a further push in deploying its broadband line across the country.

The company also has expansion plans outside of India, but no timetable has been established yet as stated in an earnings call by Kiran Thomas, President of Reliance Industries.

Reliance operates in 1.1 million kilometers of fibre optics across 1,600 Indian cities and towns. Jio has played a major role in connecting India digitally to all sections of India. With its combination of price and services, it has managed to become a household name today. Jio also operates a range of other services such as JioTV, JioMusic, and JioPay. The investment in Reliance’s fiber optic business will give a boost to its business.

Indian Railways launches Meri Saheli initiative

Amidst increasing passenger footfall ahead of the festive season, Indian Railways takes stringent measures to check issues about crowd management and women’s safety. Meri Saheli initiative is one such step towards strengthening women’s safety during train journeys.

According to a survey conducted by the Ola Mobility Institute across 11 Indian cities in 2019, only 9% of women find public transport to be safe, whereas 3% of them claim it to be “completely unsafe.” In circumstances like this, the Meri Saheli initiative comes as a brilliant proposal to reaffirm popular faith in India’s public transport system.

This is an effort to provide women passengers an environment in which they feel safe, secure, and comfortable during their journey. Operation Meri Saheli (translation: my friend) gives security to women passengers from the originating point to the destination. – said D B Kasar, IG-cum-Principal Chief Security Commissioner of South Eastern Railway

As part of the Meri Saheli initiative, RPF personnel shall be deployed at station platforms to keep a watch on the berths and coaches of trains. They shall approach unaccompanied female passengers at their originating stations and brief them about necessary safety precautions. They will make passengers aware of the stoppages on their way to keep them well-informed about their journey.

The team shall then collect their seat numbers and contact information to stay in touch with them throughout the journey. Lastly, RPF teams shall collect relevant feedback from the identified women at their destination and improve the Meri Saheli initiative. Women can now dial 182 in case of an emergency encountered en route to their destination.

Suppose a distress call is placed from a train coach. In that case, RPF personnel will corroborate immediate action to rescue the victim through the Meri Saheli initiative. Remedial measures following the call will be strictly monitored by senior officers to ensure a concerted effort.

The Meri Saheli initiative began as a pilot project in the South Eastern Railway in September 2020. After receiving good feedback, it was extended to further zones with effect from October 17, 2020. As of now, it has been in force in three trains, namely Howrah-Yesvantpur Duronto Special, Howrah-Ahmedabad Special, and Howrah-Mumbai Special.

Indian Railways is taking charge of the current situation and enforcing efficient action to protect women through schemes like the Meri Saheli initiative. By allowing women to fall back on an additional security system, it awards a renewed courage to female passengers who rely on the public transport system to travel on a daily basis.

Asia’s second-largest stock exchange company, BSE, is the first stock exchange company to get SEBI approval to start a “startup platform”. BSE Startup platform has been actively encouraging companies to get initial Public Offering (IPO) supporting SMEs and startups growth. It is a noteworthy initiative from BSE and ICICI.

The Startups platform provides an opportunity for investors to make an entry into a company, and they also have a ready-made platform to exit. Depending on how well the stock performs, the startups can after two years, migrate to the main board of the stock exchange,– said Ajay Thakur, Head of BSE SME and Startups

BSE has been partnering with private banks like HDFC bank (since 2019) and Yes Bank (Since September 2020) to promote Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and startups to get listing on the exchange platform.

Recently, BSE and ICCI signed an MoU to support the mission. ICCI will assist in evaluating SMEs and startups for listing on the BSE SME board. It will conduct various campaigns and offer networking workshops to raise awareness among the startups of the advantages of going public with an IPO.

Through BSE and ICICI association, it will help the listed SMEs and startups gain visibility among the investor network. The startups and SMEs can, therefore, leverage ICICI’s industry connections to gain global recognition through the mentorship and be featured on government announced programs, acceleration funds, international presence, and global business relations.

Through ICCI, we believe more startups and SMEs will get adequate exposure on the benefits of listing on an exchange and will be able to comprehend the functioning of the capital market in a better way – said Ajay Thakur, Head of BSE SME and Startups

BSE startup was launched in December 2018. Since then, only two companies Alphalogic Techsys and Transpact Enterprises, have been listed on the platform. This has made BSE step up and take additional measures to encourage more and more startups.

The MoU between BSE and ICICI focuses on bridging the gap between SMEs and startups and empower them to gain a listing on the stock exchange.

Dr. Anthony Fauci’s take on the availability of COVID-19 vaccine

Covid-19 Vaccine

The pandemic is going strong, and the second wave has hit Europe, and people are struggling to cope-up with it. France and the United Kingdom have announced the second lockdown, taking a toll on the people. In these challenging times, there is a positivity surrounding the vaccine, which seemed difficult at the start of the year. According to the United State Infectious Disease Expert, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the first US COVID-19 vaccine is expected to be shipped in late December or early January.

Moderna Inc and Pfizer Inc are the current front-runners to develop a COVID-19 vaccine fully enrolled and collecting data on safety and efficacy. At the same time, the other six candidates are at different stages of clinical trials and testing.

The issue of vaccines is good news at a time of considerable concern and stress about the outbreak. As we get into November and then maybe into December, we will get an answer as to whether one or more of these candidates are safe and effective. I am cautiously optimistic, – said Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

After the clinical trials conducted by the companies, they are yet to release the data for the public. Once the companies release the data, they will be checked and authorized by the likes of the US Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Suppose the results of the trials deem to be fit. In that case, the government and FDA will look for the perfect strategy to distribute the vaccines amongst the population.

Pfizer recently disclosed that its vaccine is 90% effective in the final stage of clinical trials, which Fauci called it ‘extraordinary’. While the high efficacy shows the optimism of a safe vaccine in the near future, Fauci emphasized that if the COVID-19 vaccine is available, no one is certain about its protection and how long it will be effective.

The masks, sanitizers and handwashes have become the part and parcel of life since the start of 2020 and are expected to stay for a while. With vaccines yet to be available in the market, coronavirus damage will linger on, and people should take precautions and maintain social distancing.

Despite the pandemic hitting hard, people are able to put up a strong show with the limited resources they have. The main concern is the unavailability of the COVID-19 vaccine. With many companies sharing regular updates about the development of the possible solution, the news of the vaccine’s availability in the coming weeks brings joy to the people.

Indian Army launched SAI: A secure and encrypted messaging app

Indian Army launched SAI

In line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign, the Indian Army launched SAI, a secure messaging platform which stands for Secure Application for the Internet. This messaging platform that officially belongs to the Indian government works similarly to the leading messaging applications like Telegram and WhatsApp. The primary aim of introducing this application is to ensure that no classified data is leaked to third parties or intelligence agencies.

The model is similar to commercially available messaging applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, SAMVAD, and GIMS and utilizes end-to-end encryption messaging protocol. SAI scores over on security features with local in-house servers and coding, which can be tweaked as per requirements. – said the Defence Ministry

Last year, the Indian Army asked its personnel to avoid using WhatsApp for official work and asked officers holding sensitive appointments to delete their Facebook accounts. This action was taken when the ministry observed a potential attempt to obtain classified information by Chinese and Pakistani online agents.

The Indian Army launched SAI, which will be used for internal communication between the officials. The android application has the end-to-end secure voice, texts, and video calling services. According to the Ministry of Defence, the code base of the application is designed in such a way as to support the specific needs of India‘s armed forces and has in-house data servers.

The app promises proper security for the messages communicated between officials. This is made possible with end-to-end encryption where the conversations are encrypted before being sent from the sender to the receiver. This ensures that the information remains secure, and no third party gets access to it.

The app is created by Col. Sai Shankar, commanding officer of a signals unit in Rajasthan, and has been tested by the government’s nodal agency CERT and army cyber group. The process of filing applications for Intellectual Property Rights, hosting SAI on NIC, and working on IOS platforms are on a roll. The Defence minister Rajnath Singh also praised Col. Sai Shankar on his skill and ingenuity for developing such an application.

With cyber theft and hackers trying to trick individuals into downloading malware that reads screen content, the Indian Army launched SAI, an end-to-end encryption app that would be a benchmark in a secure communication environment.

Corporates prioritize employee well-being amidst pandemic

Employee well-being

COVID-19 and subsequent lockdown encouraged the trend of remote working. Companies, big or small, across nations immediately focused on protecting their most prized asset – employees. In fact, they started putting their employees’ physical, psychological, and emotional safety ahead of productivity issues as the idea of employee well-being took center stage.

In this effort, many companies are setting the right example by launching an employee-friendly policy to support seniors and employees with underlying health conditions to avoid physically coming to work. The policy is extended with health benefits too. Starbucks is one such company that is committed to the health and well-being of its partners and customers. As a part of its larger mental health initiative, Starbucks has partnered with Lyra Health to provide mental health care resources to its employees in the US and extended the benefits to their eligible family members. These benefits include free 20 sessions (videos/in-person) a year with access to a health therapist or coach.

Stress and anxiety are a normal part of everyday life at home and work. With pandemic, it has been a major concern for all. To build a strong relationship with employees, Mphasis introduced wellness apps, WFH wellness tips, pulse surveys, and stress-busting Tryouts games.

Anxiety has emerged as a prime area of concern, and therefore we have trained counselors on board as a part of our Mental Health Train initiative, who conduct anxiety management session for our employees. – said Srikanth Karra, Chief Human Resources Offices, Mphasis

Salesforce India has been doing the same in their own unique ways. With a hundred percent of their workforce working from home, numerous programs such as Wednesday Wellbeing, Fitness benefits, and home-office allowances for employees were launched.

Big brands also started reevaluating employee benefits to include plans that focus on employee well-being. Ally Financial, like any other company, had its plan ready, but that also prepared them for unintended consequences. They took a close look at the current health care benefits and modified it to include free telemedicine consults, access to free mental health professionals, expanded childcare support, 100% coverage of diagnostic testing and virtual doctor visits, and two weeks of paid leave caring for a family member with COVID-19

COVID-19 also forced companies to rewrite rules of the employer-employee relationship. After all, it takes much more than a laptop, and a few conference calls to build successful teams. Without work from home policies, firms are working harder to keep employees engaged and productivity high. A Utah-based company called Canopy provides tax software for accounting. Considering that they never had a ‘work from home’ culture, they were certainly caught on the wrong foot. With over 100 employees working from home during the pandemic, they were forced to get creative. Quick adjustments to processes and reimbursements to make their homes’ work-friendly’, wellness programs, and regular communications made the transition easier.

When companies are still coming to terms with the right protocols of working from home, IBM made the first move. Firms must be agile to respond to the new reality, work creatively with empathy and compassion, and reimagine ways to stay productive. For instance, IBM’s work from home pledge speaks about respect when people are not ‘camera-ready’ kindness and empathy towards unexpected introductions to extended family members. This may be a creative and simple message, but it speaks directly about the firm’s commitment towards the safety and health teams.

As the pandemic spreads its gloom across the world, it is heartening to see positive initiatives coming out of it. Big firms and corporations started to pitch in and made employee well-being and their safety a priority.

Villgro, one of the world’s largest social enterprise incubators, has partnered with the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) to launch an Innovation challenge for individuals and startups to find technological solutions in the Sexual, Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) space. The best innovative solution will get an opportunity to showcase their technology to the global audience and will also receive a cash prize of INR 3.5 lakh.

FPAI is a civil society organization in India that offers services in 18 states and Union territories of India with a key focus on sexual and reproductive health. Their main objective is to support the community’s development and wellbeing.

The Innovation Challenge will facilitate the co-creation of technology-based solutions that will enable more young people to demand information and services pertaining to sexuality education, modern contraception, and reproductive healthcare.- said Dr. Kalpana Apte, Secretary General, FPA India

The innovation challenge is focused on youth who are working to find technical solutions for the challenges faced in the sexual and reproductive health space. The participants must address the five problem areas in the SRHR space.

These problem areas include technology-driven solutions for multilingual comprehensive sex education, affordable solutions for early diagnosis of pregnancy, eco-friendly disposing of sanitary napkins, early diagnosis of PCOS among young girls, ovulation monitoring and management solutions. The innovation of awareness solutions can be based on mobile apps/AI/VR/AR/NLP/video or chatbot.

India lags behind many countries in development of infrastructure to deal with sexual and reproductive health problems. With the innovation ecosystem we have seen in the startup space in India, we expect disruptive solutions in SRH and also provide a platform for many entrepreneurs and innovators to convert their ideas into sustainable business models. – said Srinivasan Ramanujam, CEO, Villgro

A group of 15 innovators would be selected for the immersion program offered by Villgro. The immersion program will consist of webinars and interactions with industry experts and youth volunteers of FPAI, proper mentorship on identifying and converting ideas into business solutions. The program would help the innovators to connect with incubators for funding and would provide rapid prototyping support to create pilot prototype solutions.

Young people often lack necessary information to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights. Technology offers vast opportunities for awareness and provides the right solutions. The innovation challenge will help in dealing with the challenges in the sexual and reproductive health space and act as an opportunity for innovators to convert their ideas into business solutions.

Wearable sensors to be printed directly on the skin

Wearable sensors

Driven by Penn State University’s Larry (Huanyu) Cheng, the US and Chinese researchers and scientists have developed an innovative, easier, and more accurate technique that makes biosensors to be printed directly on the skin. Wearable sensors allow for a faster and more accurate monitoring of health parameters such as body temperature, electrical heart signals, blood oxygen saturation, and even hydration levels.

Wearable sensors are a massive leap from the sweat monitor developed by Cheng and his colleagues. Unlike other wearable technologies, the new biosensor does not require batteries or experience any downtime for recharging. Most importantly, they have worked on allowing the movement from normal day-to-day activities to provide the biosensor with energy to be captured, stored, and used to minimize disrupting daily routines.

We are interested in applying this multifunctional, wearable sensing technology for diagnostic confirmation and timely treatments for cardiopulmonary diseases, including Covid-19, pneumonia, and fibrotic lung diseases. – said Larry (Huanyu) Cheng, Assistant Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Penn State University

Keeping ease and accuracy as their key drivers, Cheng and his team have even factored in the possibility of incorporating additional components in the future. Currently, in its prototype stage, the wearable biosensor can accurately measure body temperature, changes in skin moisture, blood oxygen and saturation levels, and even electrophysiological signals such as those noticed on an ECG. The close contact of the biosensor to the skin ensures its accuracy.

While making wearable sensors, the team of scientists has successfully overcome the common concern of metal components being printed onto the skin, having a very high temperature, and causing burns on the skin. A paint paste containing polyvinyl alcohol and calcium carbonate, ingredients commonly found in peelable face masks, is first applied onto the skin. Other nanoparticles like aluminum, magnesium oxides, metallic salts, and copper act as cooling agents to allow the biosensor made of silver nanoparticles to be printed onto the skin at a safe room temperature. The printing process is completed with cold air blown onto the skin to dry out the residual water from the ink to bond the sensor to the skin.

It could be recycled since removal doesn’t damage the device. And importantly, removal doesn’t damage the skin, either. That’s especially important for people with sensitive skin, like the elderly and babies. The device can be useful without being an extra burden to the person using it or to the environment. – said Larry (Huanyu) Cheng, Assistant Professor of Engineering Science and Mechanics, Penn State University

While long-term trials are still being carried out to see if the wearable sensors can be worn over several weeks or months, Cheng has confirmed that the sensor is resilient to colder temperatures and can be easily removed with hot water without causing any damage to the skin. Further research is being carried out for a more ‘sophisticated wireless link-up for the biosensor in the future’ to welcome the possibility of printing flexible circuit boards onto paper and fabric using similar technology.

Connecting the biosensor’s use in aiding those infected with the COVID-19 virus has also been a big factor that stands out here. With its quicker, continuous, and accurate measuring and monitoring of vitals, the biosensor has the potential to alert healthcare professionals of any deteriorating parameters in sick, fragile, and/or hospitalized patients. The wearable sensors are quickly proving its significance, especially for professionals working in dangerous or remote environments.
