International Day of the Girl Child: My Voice, our equal future

0
International Girl Child Day
International Day of the Girl Child

International Day of the Girl Child is celebrated on October 11, to recognize girls’ rights and support initiatives to achieve those rights. As part of this year’s theme, ‘My voice, our equal future’ UNICEF wants to encourage girls and women all over the world to stand up for themselves and live free from gender-based violence. They are using the collective voice of all women and engage youth to inspire a positive attitude and change toward gender equality by sharing inspiring stories of girls who have excelled in some way or the other.

In addition to a collective voice, UN Women even launched the ‘Shadow Pandemic Awareness Campaign’ to talk about and take a stance against domestic violence. As part of their public service announcement, they decided to present a 60-second film narrated by Kate Winslet in which they highlight the rise in domestic violence cases through the current pandemic. The film has even emphasized the importance of standing up and taking action to support all women and stop domestic violence.

The World Health Organization (WHO) co-organized a virtual intergenerational dialogue between girl advocates and high-level leaders about putting girls and their rights at the center of decision-making processes.

The health and wellbeing of girls is a priority for WHO. We have to come together to improve the lives and health of girls, but girls themselves must be at the center of that effort. I am happy to say that we will soon be launching a Youth Council to engage with the leadership of WHO on global health issues. – said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, at the virtual event

As a part of celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child and ‘Get Girls Equal’ campaign under Plan International organization, girls are taking leading roles in business, media, politics, and technology to demand equal freedom online for girls and women. The global #girlstakeover campaign is a call to action towards online abuse by stepping into the shoes of top leaders. Online violence is a serious issue, and girls need to know when they are threatened online and report it. Girls around the world have come together and written an open letter to influential social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok to address this and create ways to report abuse that support girls.

Doing their bit, Shakti Society, a non profit society in India, committed to empowering women and families through community forums, has presented their latest initiative – The Shakti Film Festival. Their mission is to use the films as a medium to acknowledge and spread awareness of women’s contribution to society. They have scheduled their films to be screened over two days – October 10 and 11, to celebrate International Day of the Girl Child. Their previous initiatives have successfully created a powerful dialogue around gender equality.

To stand strong against these worrisome trends is a task all must take to ensure our future is one of equality and justice for all. Women’s rights movements have been an unrepentant force demanding a better world for all. States and international organizations must continue their support. Governments must take urgent actions to renew commitments to gender equality. – Constanza Tabbush, Research Specialist at Research and Data section of UN Women

Earlier this year, to celebrate and honor the 25th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, UN Women launched the ‘Generation Equality Campaign’ as a ‘multi-year, multi-partner campaign and movement for bold action on gender equality.’ Their aim is to highlight ‘intergenerational and youth engagement’ to advocate for gender equality. They are working to commence a ‘set of concrete, ambitious, and transformative actions to achieve immediate and irreversible progress towards gender equality.’ Additionally, UN Women joined hands with Plan International to co-host a conversation on digital youth activism, girls’ rights, and safety in online spaces on October 7, 2020.

The movements for voicing girls’ rights is not new. A number of initiatives and efforts have been employed over the past year to empower women, prevent gender-based violence, and spread a positive message of gender equality. A few other great examples are the Indian government criminalizing child marriages, Mexico reinforcing their protections of women’s sexual and reproductive rights, Vietnam’s change in their labor code requiring workplaces to address sexual harassment, and the launch of the UN Trust Fund to end violence against women, which has been crucial in its activities through the COVID-19 crisis.

The numbers of domestic violence cases see a significant rise through the pandemic. This year, advocating for gender equality and taking a stance against gender-based violence has never been more important. Taking a step further, organizations like UN Women, WHO and Plan International are involved in various initiatives to take urgent action towards positive and permanent gender equality changes. The events leading to the International Day of the Girl Child are just a few displays of these immense efforts.

Indian Startups united to fight dominance from big tech players

Indian Startups united

Founders of Indian startups united for a virtual Zoom meeting recently to launch a collective digital reform movement. Founders of Razorpay, IndiaMART, Dream Sports, PhonePe, Policybazaar, and GOQii were notable members of the meet.

The meeting was organized to discuss the supremacy of large technology corporations such as Google and Facebook and raise their voice against their dominance in the market. According to participant entrepreneurs, Google’s unfair practices and its excessive control over the conduct of applications on its platform, Google Play Store, tend to undermine the efforts of small players. Google, however, has not commented on this. It has always made a strong stance for its policy to protect Android users and enforce them on developers.

Moreover, Indian startups united to raise their voice against Google’s recent decision to impose a 30% commission on new categories of online services like education, health, and dating.

At the Zoom meeting, Indian startups united to create a viable alternative to Google Play Store so that startup companies can carry out their operations in a free and fair manner.

We can’t let India’s digital dreams be controlled by one or two global companies. We will face retaliation from Big Tech (but) that is a confirmation of our importance and their dominance on world technology. India is a builder of global technologies, not just a market or importer. Our time is now. – said Vijay Shekhar Sharma, Founder of Paytm

He urges founders to engage in collective action against big tech players’ unjust dominance so that worthy startups can gain more exposure in the Indian digital market. He also pointed to the new post COVID-19 economic policy of Atmanirbhar Bharat and asked participants to view this in relation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to a self-sufficient Indian market.

India is a large enough country, and its digital ecosystem is growing. We can’t let foreign companies dictate how we do business, – said Vishal Gondal, Founder, and CEO of GOQii

During the Zoom meet, entrepreneurs stressed the need to overcome the supremacy of big tech corporations and join hands against their unfair practices so that smaller companies can attract the government’s attention towards their cause. This may involve Google and Facebook to incorporate local entities governed by local policy and legislation. The appeal from Indian startups is a bold move towards self-reliant India.

NASA’s advanced toilet for International Space Station

NASA’s advanced toilet for International Space Station

NASA has launched an advanced toilet for the International Space Station (ISS) to test out the system before using it in the future Mars and Moon missions. The $23 million space toilet, called Universal Waste Management System (UWMS), is smaller, more comfortable, and supports a large crew as NASA’s Commercial Crew Program sends more astronauts to the station. NASA’s advanced space toilet left Earth on 2 October.

NASA’s advanced toilet system is 65 percent smaller and 40 percent lighter than the toilet currently used. It will also install another UWMS unit in Orion spacecraft for the astronauts that go on a 10-day mission to the moon.

We recycle about 90 percent of all water-based liquids on the space station, including urine and sweat. What we try to do aboard the space station is mimic elements of Earth’s natural water cycle to reclaim water from the air. And when it comes to our urine on the ISS, today’s coffee is tomorrow’s coffee! – said Jessica Meir, Nasa Astronaut

The UWMS will feed pre-treat urine into a regenerative system, which recycles the water for further use. At the same time, for a shorter duration mission, the UWMS will not be pre-treated with chemicals and kept for disposal. The system will be able to recycle more urine, fit for consumption. In addition to this, the UWMS is based on ergonomic design requiring less clean up and maintenance time, corrosion-resistant, durable parts to reduce the likelihood of maintenance outside of the set schedule.

NASA’s advanced toilet is also better suited for women as compared to old toilets. The new shape provides a tilted seat to make it taller and better accommodate female astronauts.

Lack of gravity has always remained one of the most challenging aspects for the astronauts. Airflow is used to pull the urine and feces away from the body and into the proper receptacles. However, now the new feature in UWMS will automatically start the airflow when the toilet lid is lifted and will also help to control the odor.

The UWMS’s central design is universal and can be easily integrated into different spacecraft and life support systems. The space station is the only in-space station for the trial purpose to validate long-term life support and recycling systems.

NASA is a center of human exploration, technology, and science. With its history of unveiling mysteries of the universe, NASA engineers have also contributed to building technologies with a positive economic impact on health & medicine, transportation, public safety, consumer products, computer technologies, environment & agriculture resources, and industrial activity. NASA’s goal is to reach 98 percent recycling rates before the first human missions aboard a proposed Mars transport vehicle.

Forest Positive Coalition of Action: A step towards forest future

Forest Positive Coalition of Action

Joining hands with 17 global consumer brands, retailers, and manufacturers, the Forest Positive Coalition of Action is working towards ‘accelerating systemic efforts’ to eliminate deforestation and forest degradation from key commodity supply chains of palm oil, soy, paper, and pulp and fiber-based packaging. The initiative has been taken after the UK government suggested legislation that would fine food firms for using products such as cocoa, soy, and palm oil grown on lands that are subjected to illegal deforestation

The Forest Positive Coalition of Action, co-sponsored by Carrefour and Mars, Incorporated, has brought together some of the world’s largest consumer brands bringing their collective market value up to a whopping $1.8 million. Among the other 15 members are Colgate-Palmolive Company, Danone, Essity, General Mills, Grupo Bimbo, Jeronimo Martins, METRO AG, Mondelez International, Nestle, P & G, Pepsico, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Unilever, and Walmart.

We believe forest protection is a driver of economic growth, not a sacrifice to growth. Forest protection provides healthy ecosystems and supports productive landscapes and resilient communities. In the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, we must ensure that efforts to protect forests are part of the global response. This response requires all actors with interest in ending deforestation and who are committed to being part of the solution to come together. – Grant Reid, President & CEO, Mars, Incorporated and CGF Board Co-Sponsor of the Forest Positive Coalition

With so many powerful and influential brands becoming a part of the initiative, it is easier for CGF to fulfill their hope to use their collective reach and knowledge. Their strategy rounds up global networks, producers, suppliers and traders, governments, and civil society to promote and action forest positive solutions.

The Forest Positive Coalition of Action focuses on four areas. With commodity operations being their first and foremost concern, suppliers and traders have been entrusted with implementing forest positive actions across the entire commodity operations.

Additionally, they hope to exercise the collective voice of all members of the coalition to advocate the cause and involve the government and stakeholders to support and facilitate forest conservation. Transparency and accountability have always been key to seeing an initiative. The coalition plans to see this through with regular progress reports.

“We are actively changing our model in order to become forest positive businesses. We are fully committed to engaging supply chain actors, taking action on the ground, and working collectively to catalyse change. Multi-stakeholder action is critical, particularly political engagement at the national and regional levels, as is strong support from the investment community.” – said Alexandre Bompard, Chairman and CEO, Carrefour and CGF Board Co-Sponsor of the Forest Positive Coalition

Having used their past experiences and attempts at forest conservation as an example, CGF has identified their proven effective strategies to give their new initiative a fresh and powerful boost. They also analyzed the sector endangering the forest the most and were able to narrow down the commodity sector as the key focus area of action. They have set out a roadmap of steps to be actioned and achieved over the next 2-3 years.

Forest endangering has been a concern for many years. While numerous attempts have been made to adopt a forest positive approach, efforts have fallen short. This coalition has grouped some of the biggest, most influential names, substantially increasing the hope and probability of the initiative being successful.

Central Government’s new scheme to boost Dalit startups

Dalit Startups - Point2note

The next three years will witness a boom in Dalits startups, thanks to a government initiative in the pipeline. Aiming to create 1,000 startups of professionals belonging to the Scheduled Castes, the center intends to facilitate the transformation of these startup ideas to take shape into commercial launches with the best conducive technological facilities.

Titled, ‘Ambedkar Social Innovation Incubation Mission’ (ASIIM), the social justice and empowerment ministry program will nurture these entrepreneurial plans of ambitious young Dalit techies. The move will be a radical change in the professional aspirations of those from these marginalized sections. With this opportunity, the new generation of youth can pursue their professional interests and indulge in innovation and entrepreneurship.

A total budget of Rs. 308.8 crores have been allocated for ASIIM, which will run from 2020-24. The funds will be directed through the social justice ministry’s ‘Venture Capital Fund for SCs’, managed by the IFCI Venture Capital Fund Limited.

The program will run with the creation of a ‘national social innovation hub’, which will harness entrepreneurial initiatives of central ministries and state governments and plan the extension policies for the proposals. Government bodies, chambers of industry, CSR departments, social enterprises, multilateral aid agencies, and international incubation centers will be approached to support and generate resources.

A separate ‘business incubator hub’ will provide support with innovation and finance for the startup ideas of these Dalit startups. It will associate with technology business incubators in leading tech institutions worldwide to expand upon the ideas under ASIIM.

A team of specialized service providers such as chartered accountants, digital marketers, and legal advisors will be assembled in the final stages to help launch the initiatives. Commercial banks, Venture Capital Funds, Angel Investors will help in providing financial assistance.

The progress of a country depends upon all sections of its society, and ASIIM is an encouraging move in the direction of providing a fillip to the Dalit techies in India. Much of India’s talents lie in these untapped sections, who perhaps remain undiscovered for want of financial aid and security. Government efforts such as ASIIM will hopefully see the rise of the nation’s economy with more equitable representation of the population.

Freedrum Smart Drum Kit is a virtual drum kit that aims to carry the drumming experience to the outdoors, the couch, or any other location one can access from their mobile. Freedrum Smart Drum Kit is built to create a unique environment for drummers at any skill level, whether the user is an emerging drummer or a professional!

The Freedrum is the pet project of August Bering, a skilled and enthusiastic drummer who, as part of a quest to formulate an alternative to heavy, noisy conventional drum kits, developed the Freedrum movement. The first version of the Freedrum was completed after several years of testing, creation, prototyping, and the Kickstarter project commenced.

Learning any skill or a musical instrument, for instance, is never too late. A massively successful Kickstarter initiative, Freedrum Smart Drum Kit aims to revamp the world of drumming, music, and compact jamming activity.

Freedrum Smart Drum Kit places the player in charge of what is basically an intangible drum kit, using advanced motion recognition technologies to detect the user’s attacks, consisting of a series of sensors that connect to the user’s sticks and feet.

To use the drum kit, users need to slide the drumsticks on the sensors, pair them with the smartphone, and take it wherever they go. It’s so convenient. It doesn’t need an internet connection and operates primarily on a battery that can keep them drumming for a week of daily use. The units of Freedrum Smart Drum Kit are interchangeable, meaning users will not have to buy special units for feet.

The Freedrum is made up of small, highly lightweight, and reliable Bluetooth sensors. A high-capacity LiPo battery operates every sensor. It uses a gyroscope to be deciphered by the app or smartphone inside a PCB enclosure that senses the sticks or feet’ movements and converts them into Bluetooth MIDI standard data.

Whenever it relates to battery life, the smart package lasts up to 14 hours when it’s fully charged. That means, due to Bluetooth features, the users can drum all night, even though everyone else is fast asleep. This is a perfect way to learn the fundamentals.

Owing to hardware constraints that cannot be worked around in the latest generation of Android devices, Android apps suffer from a tiny microsecond latency, which is minimal enough to not impact audio playback but is crucial in fast reaction time activities such as drumming.

The Freedrum is available in iOS and Garageband compliant and is suggested for iOS 10.0 or later iPhones and iPads.

The Garageband incorporation makes Freedrum Smart Drum Kit suitable for outlining fills, generating rhythms or sequencing music, and even manually manipulating drumlines.

A noiseless drum can sound weird, but for people who live in apartment complexes, have roommates, or enjoy practicing in the early hours of the morning, learning drumming may be a huge challenge. Freedrum Smart Drum Kit comes to the rescue by offering a silent way to play the drums. Identified as a “virtual drum kit that fits in your pocket,” the Freedrum Smart Drum Kit made its way into the online music and tech world with a roaring sound.

Amazon launches Ring Always Home Cam security drone

Amazon has launched a brand-new product called the Ring Always Home Cam. It is essentially an indoor security camera that acts as a surveillance drone to help keep the home’s interiors monitored when the need arises.

But does everyone need a flying drone inside their homes? Arguably, the footage and data acquired by an in-home camera could threaten privacy and security contrary to its intended purpose. But the idea and the advanced technology behind the product certainly deserves applause.

The drone-camera performs surveillance during a maximum flight time of 5-minutes on a full charge. Expected to release in 2021, the camera comes with a recharging base on which it will remain docked for the most part. Priced at $250, Amazon’s Ring Only Home Cam is a much better alternative over continuously recording CCTV cameras.

We wanted to create one camera that could give users the flexibility of every viewpoint they want around the home while delivering on our founding principles of privacy and security. – said Jamie Siminoff, founder of Ring

The Ring Always Home Cam acts like a robot that can be trained to patrol our homes at any time. The drone’s base on which it docks charges the camera and keeps it turned off when not in-flight. Alexa enabled; the device can’t be manually controlled, and the product is ‘end-to-end encrypted’ according to its makers.

The Ring is a home security company purchased by Amazon and is now a subsidiary of the tech giant. Equipped with ‘obstacle avoidance technology’, this device can perform surveillance within homes without crashing into or damaging the furniture, injuring people or pets inside the home.

This year, due to COVID-19, the event was conducted as a virtual press conference. Amazon’s Ring products were naturally the star of the event. Other Ring products launched include the Ring Car Alarm, Ring Car Cam, and the Ring Mailbox Sensor.

With a black-and-white box-like appearance, the Ring Always Home Cam is linked to the Ring Alarm System. For a surveillance flight through the home, the drone follows a predetermined “path’ or “route,” which needs to establish/trace beforehand.

Coming to concerns about privacy and security, the makers went the extra mile to ensure privacy by seeing to it that the camera lens is completely obscured by the charging base when docked. Also, the unit comes without a microphone to allay doubts regarding breach of privacy and intrusion.

While introducing the product, Jamie Siminoff, CEO of Ring, stated that the Ring Always Home Cam was designed, keeping in mind the privacy concerns to hum at a certain volume, so it’s clear the camera is in motion and is recording. This is privacy you can hear

Amazon’s Ring Always Home Cam is a flying drone camera for internal home security. The camera is meant for recording intrusions and mishaps when a user is not at home. It consists of sensors that get triggered when there are suspicious disturbances. The drone then instantly flies to see what’s going on. When any sensor is triggered, an alert is received on the user’s smartphone, and live footage starts streaming. The propellers that allow the drone to fly are encased to prevent accidents, and a humming sound emanates to indicate that the camera is in motion.

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dell Technologies made changes to their total rewards program. These improvements were made, keeping in mind employee wellbeing. At the same time, other decisions were company choices looking at the long-term monetary impact.

They also developed an inner COVID web page on their intranet site where staff members can read COVID-19 updates, FAQs, web links to internal/external sources, and raise their concerns. While it is difficult to deal with every private demand and scenario, the actions they have taken are specifically related to employee wellbeing and further help their family members and customers.

Since early in the pandemic, the leadership team has regularly communicated with employees and was fully transparent about decisions made – says Samprita Majumder, Global Benefits, APJ Leader, Dell Technologies

The adjustments made consist of giving 15 days of COVID-19-related paid leave in addition to the standard paid time off. They enhanced their health programs such as webinars and sources related to emotional/mental health and wellness concerns, parenting, and home schooling. Additionally, made traveling changes early throughout the pandemic because of mandated traveling limitations.

Dell Technologies had an objective to give a flexible work culture to its employees many years ago. Throughout this moment of the COVID-19 pandemic, they have taken proactive measures to support remote working through their Connected Workplace program.

It involved a one-time allowance to all qualified staff members to establish a home office space along with company-provided modern technology and peripherals. In many cases, whenever possible, they have improved policies on childcare as well as parenting support. Also, enhanced emotional and mental health programs assistance like resiliency training via a brand-new EAP program, meQuilibrium.

While they introduced a flexible way of working strategy ten years back, they changed from about 65% to 90% of their staff to work totally remote in a one-weekend break in response to the pandemic. They continue to adapt flexible workplace policies to permit their employees to select the job design that fits them.

As the pandemic continues, they continue to assess the scenario and share all choices around the positive measures they can take for employee wellbeing.

Post COVID-19, Dell Technologies anticipate increased focus on employee wellbeing: physical, mental, economic as well as social. As a C&B Leader, the demand for flexibility and innovation is extremely important for the company as they welcome the new normal and experience an entirely new way of working methodology.

Apple has unveiled the new Apple Watch Series 6 in its line of famous smartwatches. The Series 6 model retains the same overall architecture launched with the Apple Watch Series 4 and continues with the Series 5 but introduces a range of additional sensors to allow blood oxygen tracking and improved sleep monitoring.

Apple states that Apple Watch Series 6 will measure blood oxygen levels in around 15 seconds, using both red and infrared light. The firm claims it is working with health networks to conduct large-scale trials using the latest blood oxygen monitoring functionality, including tests to see whether it can determine whether a person is contaminated with COVID-19.

Apple Watch Series 6 completely redefines what a watch can do. With powerful new features, including a Blood Oxygen sensor and app,1 Apple Watch becomes even more indispensable by providing further insight into overall well-being. – said Jeff Williams, CEO, Apple

The Blood Oxygen sensor uses clusters of green, red, and infrared LEDs, together with four photodetectors on the back of the Apple Watch crystal, to determine the light reflected from the blood.

Apple Watch, therefore, uses a sophisticated software algorithm built into the Blood Oxygen software, which is programmed to calculate between 70% and 100% of blood oxygen. It also houses the new generation always-on altimeter and comes with a waterproof rating.

The Apple Watch now provides mental well-being monitoring tools to monitor heart attacks and elevated stress levels. It also includes routine relaxation techniques to control tension levels. Besides, the smartwatch offers sleep monitoring using a mix of accelerometer data and app tweaks available from watchOS 7. Apple reports that the Apple Watch Series 6 promises up to 18 hours of battery life.

The latest Apple Watch Series 6 doesn’t offer the same spectacular hardware enhancements as in Series 4. Instead, the trend continues with more case finishes and color offerings, enhanced performance with an upgraded processor, and substantially more robust health monitoring.

Health has been a key development area for Apple Watch since its launch, most prominently adding sleep monitoring, accessibility indicators, and hearing well-being warnings to WatchOS 7. The most significant health aspect of this year’s Series 6 may be the control of SpO2 or the ability to track oxygen saturation in the blood.

Apple Fitness+, a wellness service that syncs with the device to display Apple Watch Stats alongside a growing collection of music-based exercise content, was another major announcement. The latest Apple Watch range will also come without AC adapters in the package as part of Apple’s 2030 contribution to the environment.

Apple products are intended to make healthcare more compassionate. Apple has long been concerned with well-being, and Tim Cook has gone so far as to suggest that this may be the area in which the organization will make the biggest contribution to mankind.
